Depression Self Help

There are many avenues of Depression Self Help available to you.

The downside is that you will have to take action.

In fact just deciding to take action is in itself theraputic.

Here is a checklist of possibilities.

  • Set up a structure for your day and keep to it.
  • Daily exercise/aerobics - A brisk walk for an hour or so is often the best medicine.
  • Get out and help someone else.
  • Get a pet.
  • Get out more!
  • Do more
    • Spend some time in nature
    • List what you like about yourself
    • Read a good book
    • Watch a funny movie or TV show
      • Stay away from dramas, soaps, news bulletins etc.
    • Take a long, hot bath
    • Take care of a few small tasks
    • Play with a pet
    • Write in your journal
    • Listen to music
    • Do something spontaneous

These are all things which you can do right now!

Take a walk or embark on any form of exercise which you can manage.

You might have to literally drag yourself about, but it is stimulating your body and mind.

The purpose of these activities are to get you out and about and geneally functioning.

They are the first step of depression self help.

What is going to take a little longer is learning a behavior modifying life skill to actually solve the causes of your depression.

My personal recommendation is that you supplement any form of intervention with a program of E.F.T.

During an E.F.T. session, one of the proceedures is a series of exercises called The 9 Gamut Procedure.

The purpose of these exercises is to cause the brain to switch from one hemisphere to the other and back again.

Just in itself, this can have a positive effect toward releasing the mind from a depressed state!

If nothing else E.F.T., Affirmations and Mind Power will at least give you a real sense that you can do something to help yourself.

The easiest starting point is to embark upon a course of affirmations to both self-talk yourself into a better frame of mind, and to ask for help.

Very often depression results in one or more of our needs not being met.

Beyond our basic physical needs of food, shelter and sleep, we have other needs which are just as important to our well being.

We can be warm, well fed and safe, yet still be miserable or depressed.

We have emotional needs which are just as important to our well being as our physical needs, it's just that often they are not recognised as such.

Emotional Needs

  • Love.
  • Affection.
  • Sharing.
  • Support.
  • Being part of a group.
  • Recognition.

These are all vital to our well being.

When we lack any one of these for a short time the effect on us is not immediate, nor would we necessarily recognise any negative efffects.

However, when we are lacking any one of these emotional needs over a long period of time, the cumulative effect can be devastating.

If you recognise that any of these emotional needs are not being met in your life, then we have a need for depression self help.

We also have also identified something we can change in our life to alieviate the situation.

So many people out there will tell you that "I don't know why I could be depressed", yet just a cursory glance at their life reveals at least one of their emotional needs are completely lacking.

This probrably means that they are also in denial of any of their causes of depression.
